You Gotta Keep Moving

I’ve been home for about 7 months now, and I’m finally feeling a lot better. With this new heart, my lungs are wide open and I’m able to sing better than ever. My arms aren’t completely up to speed yet, so why not write a heavy groove song?

I went in for heart transplant surgery on March 20th. Due to complications, I was put into a medically induced coma for a week… and then I didn’t wake up. I did not fully wake up and become fully conscious until the end of April. When I woke up, I could not move my legs, I could barely move my arms, and I couldn’t talk because I had a hole in my neck.

My wife had taped pictures of my kids on the wall and she wrote down words from my song “Eater Of Death” and taped those on the wall as well. I repeated those words to myself to keep me going.

My grandmother is 90 years old and still going strong. She has always said to me – keep moving. Keep moving! And that’s what I tried to do every day. A little more each day. Until they were able to cover up my neck hole… until I was able to stand on my own… and now I’m able to walk without any help.

Music was a huge help. My physical therapists let me listen to music to motivate me. I was listening to AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” when I first walked up a flight of stairs.

I put all of this into this new song, “Keep Moving”.

“I am the pain within this space
I am the strength pounding at the gates
A will to fight and move on
Gotta keep grabbing at the sky
And keep moving on
Gotta keep moving”
